Clear Side Repeaters

Special Guest in the garage, Andrew Edgar, tells of how he went about a clear repeater install.

After looking at other cars for a long time trying to fine a suitable clear side indicator replacement for the Probe I settled upon the standard Holden VT Commodore clear repeater lights.

I went to the local Holden dealer and purchased two lenses, two orange globes and two globe holders all for a total of around $40 (Australian dollars obviously).

After several days of thinking about how to fit them to the existing hole that is cut in the front quarter panel. The Holden lens fits into a smaller rounder hole as opposed to the Probes larger rectangular hole (this I found out to be a good thing).

After thinking about several ideas for fitment including bogging up the existing hole, super glue, screwing etc I decided to build up the Holden lens to fit the existing hole. The only thing that I could find suitable for the job was some 1mm ABS plastic sheet that I could laminate into blocks. I cut and sanded larger square shape block for one end of the lens and a longer strip for the other. The square block I simply roughened up a bit with some sand paper and mixed up a small batch of 5 minute epoxy and glued it to the lens. With the other end I decided that a bit better mechanical join would be required so along with the epoxy I drilled a small hole and fitted a self tapping screw.

One of my main concerns was that I didn't want to destroy the original Probe lens if I couldn't get the Holden one to fit. I didn't want to have to buy two replacement orange lenses from Ford $$$$$$.

I also purchased the lamp holders and wired them into the existing loom also limiting the modification to the existing components on the car.

Finished and installed the RHS and loved it.

About a week later I had the second one installed (yes I was driving around with a different coloured one on either side of the car....)
