Passing Flash Modification - Version 2
How
to rewire the Aussie headlights to raise when flashing your highbeams.
This
project compliments the 'fog lamp' modification but can be implemented
solely because of appearance reasons.
I originally
decided to implement the 'fog lamp' modification as one of my first changes
to the lighting system. But whith this mod came the problem that when
I had the fog lamps on, how could I then flash any oncoming vehicles?
This is the solution which allows for the pop up headlights to raise and
all driving lights to illumintate on a stock probe. And in my case, only
the lights within the pop up headlight assembly
Task at
hand;
- Install
an additional lead from the high beam Cct(R/W) wire to the CPU brd(CN3).
- If you are
currently using a power diode for the original 'flashing' mod that I
designed, then remove this as it is no longer required.
Firstly remove
the battery connections to prevent any possible shorts that may occur.
Removing the
plastic cover beneath the steering column will allow you to isolate the
required connector. A single screw located near the lower left of the
plastic trim and the bonnet release mechanism will need to be removed.
The footwell
plastic trim also needs to be removed to allow for access to the CPU brd
which rests on top of the Fuse panel assembly. Two plastic clips hold
this panel in place but its a good idea to remove part of the lower sill
plastic.
Now unplug
the CPU brd from the fuse panel and remove its dedicated connector.
This is the
CPU brd that we will be working on.
Close up shot
of the connector(CN3) we will be using including the required solder point(3b).
New Lead soldered
to connector 3b(CN3)
CPU modification
complete, re-assembled and ready for installation.
You will now
need to locate the 'High Beam' (R/W) lead which is shown below. I made
use of this connector as it was the closest to the CPU brd, thus less
wiring required.
Close up of
the connector.
Splice the
R/W(High beam) wire and solder lead from CPU brd(CN3) to this as shown.
Now re-install
connectors and happy flashing.
NOTE:
The CPU Brd used in this modification is from a 97 SV probe. I cannot
confirm whether earlier model probes use this same CPU brd but will endeavour
to source this information.
